Family Law Reform Educational Day and Rally
Wednesday, March 8, 2017, at 10 am to 3 pm
Statehouse Montgomery, AL
Alabama Family Rights Association is sponsoring a Family Law Reform Educational Day & Rally at the State House ( 11 S Union St, Montgomery, AL 36130 ) on Wednesday, March 8th. The intent of the Educational Day & Rally is to give our elected officials the opportunity to see the negative impact that our current custody laws have on our children and to provide them with creditable information for their decision making process.
10:00 a.m. – Noon: Informational table in room 602 of the Legislative State House
– Pick up information that will educate you on the difference between the two child custody bills being proposed.
– Watch your Legislators in action at the State House.
– Visit your Legislators’ office to hand out material in support of Senate Bill 186.
Noon – 1:00 p.m.: Rally at the State House steps. Speakers to endorse Senate Bill 186.
Hot dogs, chips, and bottled water will be provided for attendees through generous donations by the Isaak Law Firm.
1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.: Informational table in room 602 of the Legislative State House

Here’s why we really need your help: House Bill 239 (HB239) and Senate Bill 191 (SB191) were written by attorneys of the Alabama Law Institute, Family Law Committee. They are the same bills…one for the House of Representatives (HB239) and one for the Senate (SB191). Even though the bills suggest that children should have “frequent and continuing” contact with their parents, the bill fails to define “frequent and continuing,” and preserves the status quo of standard visitation, thus unduly restricting a child to 4-6 days a month with one parent.
The bill ALFRA is supporting is SB186, The Children’s Equal Access Bill.
The Children’s Equal Access Act (SB186) creates an equal starting point in all child custody cases for children and their parents. Thus, equally protecting a child’s relationship with both [fit] parents and reduces placing our children at risk for suicide, juvenile incarceration, drug use, sex trafficking and teen pregnancy.
- The Children’s Equal Access Act (SB 186) is a bill that incorporates research-based recommendations from the Alabama Law Institute Family Law Standing Committee, as well as research-based conclusions from the 40 studies and consensus of over 100 social scientists regarding child custody. The 40 studies and 112 experts conclude that “shared parenting should be the norm for parenting plans for children of all ages of fit parents. The scientific data has conclusively shown that shared parenting produces better outcomes for children (success in life) compared to our currently utilized “standard visitation”.
We need a lot of concerned citizens to show up at the State House to let legislators know that the better bill is SB186.
